Description

The authors of this collaborative volume focus their attention on relationships established by European groups (French, English, Spanish, Basque) with Amerindians (Algonguin, Iroquoian, Inuit, Caddo, Aztec, e.g.) and the cultural transfers growing out of those exchanges. Together, historians, archaeologists, literary critics, anthropologists and geographers explore the objects and the historical contexts in which transfer occurred. They seek to isolate individual artefacts, disourses, practices and beliefs, to retrace their pathways through space and time, to unravel the anagrams of cultural transfer in order to better understand how cultures blend. While North America is the central setting for their exploration, side-jaunts into Europe and even Africa furnish rich material for synchronistic reflection. These studies of cultural transfer in colonial societies will nourish our thinking about intercultural mechanisms in the contemporary world.
